Each post I write will include a video from a Canadian band, so I thought it’d be convenient to store them here for your viewing pleasure. Feel free to comment on what you like or don’t like. I’ll be leaving some mini-bios and links so you can find out more aboot the bands. Where possible I’ve tried to leave direct links to their webpages, so if you like what you hear you can find out more aboot their CD catalogue there.

Of course this only works if a certain Google owned video hosting site isn’t cleaning out their server farms, or adding features while leaving their policies for how and why videos get taken down a secret… ahem. Let me know if things aren’t working out.

.

.

I’ve tried to keep the archiving as simple as possible…

Punk; Punkish; Not Punk

If you find a broken link, or the YouTube stuff isn’t loading
properly, let me know and I’ll find an alternative…
I’m Canadian, it’s what we do. Off the ice.

    No Br*an Ad*ms or Cel*ne?

    …..?

  • feartheseeds // February 14, 2007 at 6:02 pm

Not yet. I have to work my way through enough credible bands first, that way when I post videos from BA and CD people might come back regardless. My favourite so far is ‘Les Dales Hawerchuk’. When we were younger Mailbox-Baseball is something we did to pass some time between beer-runs.

Those are CURSE WORDS puddle. ICK ICK ICK.

Chiliwack? Neil Young? Lighthouse? Bruce Cockburn? Leonard Cohen? Daniel Lanois? BTO?

And what on earth is “credible” and “Alanis Morrissette” doing on the same webpage? What’s she got that Celine Dion doesn’t, besides big bruises from the ugly stick? Snarkiness? Even Raffi has more street cred.

Here across the border, Canadian radio/TV has always been better than the stuff from Seattle. And hey, my mom was Canadian. Raised on a houseboat in the Fraser River. Too bad the Unhinged States of America don’t allow dual citizenship.

  • feartheseeds // April 6, 2007 at 4:52 am

All the Young, Cohen and Lanois YouTubes have been pulled… fucking technophobe geezers. BTO I can find but most of their videos are crap or it’s a reunion tour. I forgot all aboot Chilliwack, but their video presence is pretty nonexistent as well.

Alanis may not have grown up in a gutter like Carole Pope or Raffi, but that one album was pretty good. Plus she looked good in green slime back in the day.

And hey man, if your country of residence won’t let you be half-Canuck this country will allow you to be half-Yank. And the radio signals are clearer over here.

    “Oh Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet
I would still be on my feet”

    don’t forget Joni Mitchell

but maybe there’s no Joni on youtube?

  • feartheseeds // May 19, 2007 at 4:06 am

Next post I’ll put up a classic Joni for you… .

  • absolut.folly // May 19, 2007 at 4:07 am

man, are you up? what the hell’s the time over there?

  • feartheseeds // May 19, 2007 at 4:09 am

    1976… February, 14. It’s a Monday and aboot 4:10am.

  • absolut.folly // May 19, 2007 at 4:12 am

funny. don’t mess with me. I overslept this morning, just got up, haven’t had my coffee yet (no one here to cook it for me).

  • absolut.folly // May 19, 2007 at 4:13 am

that’s right, in English you don’t cook coffee, you brew it. I’m saving you a comment on that one.

  • feartheseeds // May 19, 2007 at 4:15 am

Actually I don’t brew coffee so much as put the crystals into a cup and pour hot water over them. Sometimes I stir them. I’m aboot ten minutes away from collapsing… when I wake up I’ll send that email I think I owe you. What did you think of the music I left here? I’d think you’d recognize most of them…

  • absolut.folly // May 19, 2007 at 4:19 am

btw. an other fav Canadian singer-songwriter is Danny Michel. he’s totally indie too (or at least he used to be back in the good ol’ days).
get aquainted (if you don’t already have).

I know it’s your blog, so I’m not suggesting you should post him.

  • feartheseeds // May 19, 2007 at 4:25 am

Any requests from Finland are taken very seriously and put at, or very close to, the top of the list. There is some Joni in that amazing “The Band” video… she’s doing backup along with Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Robbie Robertson and Ronnie Hawkins while Bob Dylan sings “I Will Be Released”… I’ll put up a Danny Michel YouTube as well sometime soon…

  • absolut.folly // May 19, 2007 at 4:25 am

ok. now the comments are out of sync. you do owe me an e-mail (or even two).

I think your selection here is a good one. Well balanced. Representative. But does Alannis really deserve a spot?
Wouldn’t you rather have Sarah McLachlan?

    More comments on it later.
Coffee’s ready. I have to get some stuff done. And you should get some sleep.

  • absolut.folly // May 19, 2007 at 4:27 am

being so far away, it’s ok for me to tell you what you should do, right?

  • feartheseeds // May 19, 2007 at 4:35 am

Sleep? Wazzat? …it was okay when we were in the same room so of course it’s okay now. Sarah’s going up eventually… last time I checked most of her stuff on YT sucked a lot. Alanis had one of the biggest selling albums of all time… and I kind of liked “Jagged”. There, I said it. I’m actually aboot thirty YT’s behind on this page… I need a staff. Send me some Finnish band stuff, I’ll see if I can work it in somewhere. Crashing now… good luck with the stuff.

  • absolut.folly // May 19, 2007 at 2:47 pm

well, Celine sold alotta albums too…

Jagged was great (I still have it), but what came after sucked so bad it kind of put a damp on Alanis all together.

    actually, Alanis became Annoying.
    but that’s just my opinion.

  • feartheseeds // May 19, 2007 at 5:05 pm

Alanis went from Joan Jett / Rock Chick to Tori Amos / Arts Chick too fast… at least she took a few years off between Paula Abdul / ElectroPop Chick and releasing JLP, it gave people time to forget. At some point I’m planning on putting up Celine… probably just before the End Of Days, but she is one of the most popular singers of all time. And her voice is pretty amazing… I can’t believe I just wrote that in public.

  • absolut.folly // May 20, 2007 at 2:09 am

    me neither.

it isn’t Celine’s voice that’s her problem (apart from the wistlie ’s’ she has when she sings in English), it’s everything else.

but hey, if it’s all about the record sales… pick Brian Adams. not as frightening.

did you get the Finnish list?

  • absolut.folly // May 20, 2007 at 2:12 am

ps. JLP was abysmally bad. I wrote better lyrics than that when I was 5.

  • feartheseeds // May 20, 2007 at 4:45 am

Brian will… sigh… ‘eventually’ get a spot. I saw him in concert once. Just once. It wasn’t too bad, but there was a meningitis scare in Ottawa at the time so the Civic Centre had these weird barricades that were supposed to keep the crowd from touching… or something. I like JLP, I keep meaning to buy it but for some reason three or four other discs are always ahead of it on the list.
I got the list (thanks), but between the Ottawa Senators winning their series yesterday and me taking the Wrong Pill at exactly the Wrong Time and dropping into a six hour sleep-coma I haven’t searched for them yet. Today.

  • absolut.folly // May 20, 2007 at 6:12 am

    oh no.

    absolut.folly: “Jagged was great”

    absolut.folly: “JLP was abysmally bad”

split personality? no, just sleep deprived.

I ment to say that SFIJ (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) was abysmally bad.

the mess up lost me my edge. me thinks.

I have an extra copy of JLP (took the ex’s as well as my own when I moved). Tell me where to send it (and get the SFIJ as a bonus).

    absolut.gibberish

ps. don’t excuse yourself. e-mailing is not an obligation/chore and neither is listening to Finnish music

  • absolut.folly // May 20, 2007 at 6:16 am

well, not the music on my list anyway.

[...] Cultural Snafu (Music Page) – this is one of the first pages to ever link back to my page. I appreciated the gesture, although I had a tough time understanding his native Canadian tongue at first. Once translated, I found the music page to be of particular interest as I love hearing about new bands from all ends of the earth. [...]

If I was just waking up I’d write something like “wow! What a great way to wake up!” but I’m a little backwards this week and despite it being 7am I’m just going to bed… so now I’m at a loss for words. Except to say “holy crap, I should really update this page!”

Thanks Sticky, I really appreciate the tag.
